CONSEQUENCES OF POLICE BRUTALITY? result in the deprivation of the right to life. When police use of force is unnecessary or excessive, it may also amount to torture or other ill-treatment. In addition, unlawful use of force by the police may violate the rights to freedom from discrimination, to liberty and security, and to equal protection before the law.
HOW SHOULD AN OFFICER BEHAVE? Their mission is to protect their community by preventing and fighting crime, maintaining law and order. Police Officers are concerned with keeping the streets safe, as well as decreasing criminal activities and improving the quality of life of citizens.
WHEN A POLICE OFFICER USES UNJUSTIFIED FORCE?
must only use a certain amount of force, and they must also demonstrate why. Uses physical force against a person who is already in police custody and who is not resisting arrest. Uses a weapon against an individual who does not have a weapon, or against someone who is reasonably presumed not to be carrying one. Intimidates a suspect or witness to make a statement. Tortures or threatens to obtain a confession. Discriminates against an arrestee on the basis of race, color, national origin, or sexual orientation.
WHAT TO DO IF THE POLICE USE EXCESSIVE FORCE? In the United States, if a police officer uses excessive force or abuses his power in situations where it is not necessary, or uses his right to use force, but exceeds his authority, and causes irreparable harm, then he is legally liable for damages.
ARE THE POLICE AUTHORIZED TO KILL? Under international law, police officers must never use lethal means except as a last resort, i.e. when strictly necessary to protect themselves or others from imminent danger of death or serious injury, and only if other options to reduce the danger are insufficient.
WHICH COUNTRIES ARE THE MOST AFFECTED? the number of people who have died at the hands of police officers due to government cover-up is unknown, however, there are percentages that can approximate the real number and this list of the most affected countries was drawn up. WHO ARE THE MOST AFFECTED? Surprisingly enough, the most affected are white people, followed by black people and Hispanics.
SOLUTIONS ON POLICE BRUTALITY?
The principle of "protection of life" must be enshrined in law: only lethal means may be used to protect against an imminent threat of death or serious injury. In the event of injury or death caused by police use of force, an immediate, thorough, independent and impartial investigation must be carried out. Those responsible should be brought to justice with full due process. During protests, police should abide by their obligation to facilitate peaceful assemblies, and the use of force should not be their starting point. Detainees have the same rights as others with regard to the use of lethal means.
